Sunday 14th August 2022 - Pinewood Studios, London, England |
 |
It seemed only appropriate, having been based at the studio for 28 years, that I should help tip our hats to 60 Years of 007 here, and on one of the most glorious (and hottest) days of the summer 150 people descended on Pinewood for a very special day. Centred around Daniel Craig’s Casino Royale, the John Barry Theatre became host to morning coffee before a glorious 4K print of the movie … introduced by Executive Producer Anthony Waye.

Following which, some of the key creatives assembled to chat about the movie – unfortunately director Martin Campbell was on location in Greece, but send a heartfelt message - included in the line-up were: Tom Chadbon (Actor: the stockbroker), Chris Corbould (Special Effects Supervisor), editor extraordinaire Stuart Baird, Phil Meheux (DoP), Anthony Waye, Terry Bamber (?), Terry Madden (Second Unit AD), Alexander Witt (2nd Unit Director) and Joseph Millson (Actor: Carter). Forty-five minutes flew-by and some fascinating stories were shared including Joseph telling us how he auditioned for Bond (and Carter was a consolation prize), Stuart Baird on cutting one single frame from each shot just to tighten every single scene ever so slightly, Alex Witt on the detailed story-boarding he developed with the director and, Phil Meheux on achieving the uneasiness of the ‘toilet scene’ in the pre-titles by making it grainy and over-exposed. All truly fascinating!

There were also half a dozen memorabilia stores and author Simon Firth signing his “locations” books. Dave Worrall hosted a chat in the gardens about Bond / Pinewood filming locations, followed by a Q&A with the ‘Bond Girls’, ‘Bond Guys’ and John Glen along with what purported to be a serious talk by Paul Weston about ‘making 007 look brave’ – which actually turned into a (well-rehearsed) stunt act with Gareth, bringing the house down … just before afternoon tea. It was a long, hot day packed with fun and very special memories with a very special crowd of people.
