Born in Tel Aviv,
Palestine (and now in Israel) Chaim Topol made his film debut in 1961,
in a black & white, Hebrew language film I Like
Mike. Further film roles, including Sallah (1965, Israeli-made), Cast
a Giant Shadow (1966), Before Winter Comes and A Talent
for Loving (both
1969) followed.
In 1971 he played, perhaps, his most famous role as Tevye
in the hit film version of Fiddler on the Roof (1971). He received an
Academy
Award nomination for his work in the film, but was on active duty
with the
Isreali army at the time in 1972. He was, however, granted leave so
he could attend the ceremony in Los Angeles; which brought him instant
and
enduring recognition (20 years later he was still playing the part
on stage). Future credits include 1972's The Public Eye, and Galileo (1973)
and then big productions such as Flash Gordon (1980, as Doctor Zarkov)
and the James Bond picture For Your Eyes Only (1981), in which he played
Columbo.
Topol has balanced his film work with theatre and television (guest
starring in popular series such as Tales Of The Unexpected and Seaquest:
DSV)
along with producing three movies in his native country.
