For almost two decades, Vijay Amritraj was one of the most famous tennis
players in the world, and was the top tennis player in Asia for 14 straight
years.
In 1983 he made his acting debut in Octopussy, as Bond's contact in
India, Vijay. Sadly he came to a rather nasty end at the hands of William
Derrick's buzz saw!
Post-Bond, Vijay continued to act as well as play tennis, and notched
up credits in Hart To Hart, Countdown, Nine Deaths Of The Nija, The
Last Precinct and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. In recent years, Vijay has
become a leading tennis commentator for Fox Sports in the US and STAR-TV
in Asia. His California-based company, First Serve Entertainment, is
one of the leading multimedia production companies that deals with Asian-American
content, and helped Disney, Turner and ESPN enter the Indian market.
In 1987 he played the Davis Cup final for India against Sweden, and
was Selected by George Bush Sr. as his choice for a tennis player when
he was a senator. It was a series of friendlies against other senator's
players.
